Suggestion:
The blades are made to hammer directly onto the back-end of the blade to cut and finish off leather piece.  It is however suggested to cover blade with a small piece of wood and hammer onto the wood instead of the blade.  This will safe you blades and keep them in good condition
 
REMEMBER:  To always hammer onto a Poly or Wooden Board with blading , never hammer onto a hard i.e. steel | granite surface, it will damage blades. Also use a mallet. This is relevant for all leather tools
