Use:

Pre-mark your design on leather before you start, or use one stamp continously to create stunning patterns & borders.
 
Place stamp on leather and hold steady
Hit the embossing tool with a mallet in a perpendicular fashion and try to hit once only, to ensure a crisp and clear effect.
To save your hand tools, use a wooden or nylon mallet

TIP:
(Refrain from hitting more than once in the same spot.  The stamp tool might have moved after the first hammer, and will then create an overlap and blurred effect)
 
Hammer perpendicular to the surface to ensure a crisp and even stamp.  It will also safe your tool for many years to come
 
Use a mallet when hammering your tools, this will extend the life of your tools and also save your ears a bit:-). Steel on steel is never a good thing!
